First half dominating St. Olaf

Below is a recap of our game against St. Olaf. It was a fantastic showing by the Gusties. We came out dominating from the start getting three fantastic goals all in the first half. It was a great team win where we possessed and played our Gustie tempo the entire game. It was fantastic MIAC win and we are excited to keep it going!

Women’s Soccer Scores Three First Half Goals In Victory At St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team got back in the win column Wednesday evening, defeating St. Olaf 3-1. The win moves the Gusties to 6-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while the Oles drop to 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the league.

“We played a solid 90 minutes today,” Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie said. “We had many dangerous looks in the first half and it was great to see us put three in the back of the net. Their goalkeeper did a great job, preventing us from scoring a few more.”

Fifteen minutes into the contest, Hannah Sturtz (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) scored her third goal of the season on an assist from Lauren Johnson (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.). Then in the 22^nd minute, Abby Mullenbach (So., Lakeville, Minn.) found the back of the net for the second time this year on an assist from Emily Skogseth (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.). The Oles ended the shutout in the 29^thminute, but nearly six minutes later Judith Hepburn (So., North Pole, Alaska) scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Josie Mazzone (Sr., Rapid City, S.D.), for a 3-1 Gustavus lead, which stood at halftime.

Neither team was able to score in the final 45 minutes as the Gusties outshot the Oles 21-12, including a 12-6 advantage in the first half. Gustavus also had eight corner kick opportunities to St. Olaf’s two. Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) made three saves in the complete game effort.

“In the second half we were able to control the tempo of the game,” Burnett-Kurie said. “Our backline did a great job of keeping our shape. St. Olaf can score at any point so it was nice to see us focus on all the little details.

“Lauren Johnson was exceptional in the midfield. We were a bit unlucky to not score again in the second half.”

Gustavus travels to Augsburg Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Third Annual Run for Kicks 5K!

It's our big fundraiser of the year! We are set to host our third annual Run for Kicks 5k fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 8. The race begins at 10 a.m. on the paved and limestone trails of the Linneaus Arboretum on west side of the Gustavus campus.

The race is timed by Running Ventures and is welcome to both runners and walkers. Each participant will receive a custom designed t-shirt and post-race goodies with their registration. [Side note, the tshirts are awesome and worth every penny.]

First MIAC loss

Below is a recap of our game against St. Thomas. It was a game where we competed until the end but the result was not there. It was a hard fought game against a very good MIAC opponent and each team showed up to play. We are now focusing on the next game and how we can add more and more layers to the great play we have developed so far this season!

Tommies Shut Out Women’s Soccer 2-0

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team was downed 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Gustie Soccer Field during homecoming, snapping its three-game winning streak.

“Today was a battle,” said Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie. “Both teams possessed the ball well, but unfortunately we were unable to find the back of the net. We had some solid performance and learned a lot about managing the game. It was not the result we wanted, but we continued to improve and had some bright spots.”

Locked in a scoreless tie through 38 minutes of play, Brielle Bierman gave the Tommies a 1-0 lead, where the score stood heading into the halftime break.

St. Thomas out shot the Gusties by a slim margin, 4-3 in the first half, while each team tallied one corner kick.

Play was even in the second half until the Tommies were able to add another goal. Mallory DeBoom scored at the 77th minute to give St. Thomas 2-0 cushion. Gustavus was not able to bounce back despite owning a 2-1 edge in corner kicks in the second half and finishing with five shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) made five saves in the loss. Her record dips to 5-2-1 on the season.

“We are now focused on our weekday matchup by continuing to build the layers of our game,” Burnett-Kurie commented.

The Gusties, now 5-2-1 overall and 2-1 during conference play, return to action on Wednesday afternoon at St. Olaf College. 

Crafty Play Seals the Win

Below is a recap of our game against UW-Stout. We were able to contain their quick forwards and get a nice win to keep our streak going. We had two well deserving players who found the net for their first goals of the season. Abby Mullenbach got her first goal of the season by getting in behind and crushing the ball from a fantastic pass from Hannah Sturtz. Josie Mazzone then sealed the game in the second half  after she outran their whole back line and Sophie Leininger found her on a cheeky through ball. It was a great finish to beat a fast Wisconsin team!

Late Goal Pushes Women’s Soccer Past UW-Stout 2-1

ST. PETER, Minn. – For the second straight game, the Gustavus women’s soccer team claimed a 2-1 victory, this time against the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Tuesday. A goal with less than eight minutes remaining in regulation proved to be the game-winner for the Gusties as they improve to 5-1-1 overall, while UW-Stout drops to 1-4.

Gustavus took the initial lead 14 minutes into the game as Abby Mullenbach (So., Lakeville, Minn.) put the ball away directly in front of the keeper for her first goal of the season on an assist from Hannah Sturtz (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.). Neither team was able to score the rest of the half with Gustavus holding an 11-3 advantage in shots.

It didn’t take long into the second half for the Blue Devils to knot the score as they found the back of the net at the 47:04 mark. With time winding down and the sense of urgency picking up, Sophie Leininger (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) broke away from the UW-Stout defense and found Josie Mazzone (Sr., Rapid City, S.D.) free up the right side as Mazzone went to the back post for the game-winner with 7:44 left on the clock.

The Gusties outshot the Blue Devils 19-8, controlling the tempo for the majority of the game. Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) tallied five saves in the complete game win, moving her record to 5-1-1.

Gustavus continues its homestand at 3:30 p.m. Saturday for a Homecoming matchup against the University of St. Thomas.

Women’s Soccer Erases One-Goal Deficit For 2-1 Victory Over Concordia

ST. PETER, Minn. – In front of a record-setting crowd Saturday for a women’s soccer game at the Gustie Soccer Field, Gustavus erased a second half 1-0 deficit and came away with an emotional 2-1 victory over Concordia on a day that celebrated Trina Rinke – a would-be junior defender who is missing the season as a result of her treatment for ovarian cancer, which was diagnosed this summer.

After a scoreless first half that saw Gustavus outshoot Concordia 12-3, it was the Cobbers that struck first 48 seconds into the second half. The Gusties put that goal behind them in a hurry as they answered 23 seconds later. Lauren Johnson (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.) fired a shot from the top of the box that cleared the keeper’s head and snuck under the crossbar. Thirteen minutes passed until Emily Skogseth (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) scored what proved the be the game-winner on a pass from Grace Brustad (Jr., Edina, Minn.).

Gustavus finished the game with a 20-5 advantage in shots, while Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) tallied four saves. Perhaps Becker’s best play of the game occurred on a Cobber breakaway with 18:30 remaining in the game as she stepped up and made a diving stop on the ball, preventing an open shot that could have tied the game.

Gustavus continues its homestand at 4 p.m. Tuesday against the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

MIAC PLAY!

Below is a recap of our game against Carleton! It was a great first win, beating them for the first time since 2009. Starting off a little slow, we were able to pick it up in the second half and control the rest of the game. Two great second half goals, with Hannah picking up the first within seconds of being subbed on in the second half. Talk about a FANTASTIC impact! First Year Sophie Olson also made an impact with picking up her first career point on an assist to Chase Miller. Fourth goose egg in a row! Let's go!

Women’s Soccer Opens MIAC Play With 2-0 Win At Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team started Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play today with a 2-0 victory at Carleton. The Gusties scored both their goals in the second half while the defense recorded its fourth-straight shutout. Gustavus improves to 3-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC, while the Knights drop their first game of the season, falling to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.

“The first half we struggled a bit as Carleton came out more physical and ready to go,” Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie said, who led the Gusties to a win over Carleton for the first time in her six seasons at the helm (first win over Carleton since 2009). “We made a few adjustments at half, settled down and got our legs under us. We controlled the tempo for much of the second half, moved the ball well, and created dangerous opportunities in the final third. It was fun to watch us move the ball – lots of creativity.”

After a scoreless first half that saw Carleton outshoot the Gusties 7-5, Hannah Sturtz (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 60:45 mark, finding the lower left corner of the net on an assist from Chase Miller (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.). Nearly seven minutes later, Miller curled a left-footed shot off the crossbar and in for the insurance goal.

Carleton ended the game with an 11-10 advantage in shots, but could not get one past keeper Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) as she tallied seven saves.

“With Carleton, you have to fight all the way down to the end and we made sure we put together a solid 90 minutes,” Burnett-Kurie said. “It’s fun to watch this team play and fight.”

Gustavus hosts its home opener at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Concordia. The match is designated as a charity game for would-be junior midfielder Trina Rinke, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer this summer. More information on the charity game can be found here.

Gusties end in a draw

It was hot, it was physical, it was intense. Our game vs. UW La Crosse was a battle until the very end of the second overtime and a great way to show what we could do against a very good team to end our weekend in Wisconsin. We moved the ball well and our backline was tested against some top end speed, but we were able to handle it. Ashley Becker showed us what Ashley Becker can do!

Women’s Soccer And UW-La Crosse End In 0-0 Draw

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team Sunday battled back and forth with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and ended in a 0-0 draw after two overtime periods. The tie moves the Gusties to 2-1-1, while the Eagles move to 2-0-2.

“They are a very fast, dangerous team,” Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie said of UW-La Crosse. “They are able to attack so quickly, which is different than anything we’ve seen so far this season. It was great to see our team step up and battle hard.”

Gustavus was outshot in every period, including 12-5 in the first half, 10-8 in the second, and 7-1 in the overtime periods, for a total difference of 29-14. Keeper Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) was up for the challenge, though, making a career-high 11 saves in a 110-minute shutout.

“Our entire team did a great job defensively,” Burnett-Kurie said. “Ashley Becker had saves that made your jaw drop. We’ve seen them before and she didn’t disappoint today.”

Josie Mazzone (Sr., Rapid City, S.D.) paced the offensive pressure for the Gusties, recording four shots and two on goal. Katie Ashpole (Fy., Chaska, Minn.) also had two shots on goal.

“Playing 110 minutes required any team to dig deep; we showed that grit and fight,” Burnett-Kurie said. “We controlled parts of the overtime periods with our possession and had a couple dangerous looks inside the box. This was a competitive game through the waning seconds.

“La Crosse is a solid team and we are looking forward to building on this performance into conference play.”

Gustavus begins Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play 4 p.m. Tuesday at Carleton College.

Gusties Dominate Lawrence

Below is the recap of our dominating game vs Lawrence. We had a great showing where we were able to play all 26 players and had 6 different people contribute to the scoreboard. We came out strong and played our gustie tempo and came out with a nice win to start our weekend adventure in Wisconsin!

Women’s Soccer Tops Lawrence In Convincing Fashion, 6-0

APPLETON, Wis. –  A convincing offensive performance by the Gustavus women’s soccer team resulted in a 6-0 shutout Friday night at Lawrence University. Six different Gusties scored goals, while all 26 players saw time on the pitch, outshooting the Vikings 34-2. Gustavus improves to 2-1 overall, while Lawrence drops to 1-3.

“We played well. It was so great to see so many players get career firsts,” Head Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie said. “Not only was everyone able to get into the game, but we saw great things no matter the group of players on the field.”

Lauren Johnson (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.) scored her first career goal in what proved to be the game-winner 11:14 into the game on an assist from Sophie Leininger (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.). Two minutes later, Leininger found Hannah Sturtz (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) for the second goal and neither team was able to find the back of the net for the rest of the half.

Chase Miller (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) increased the lead to three goals nearly five minutes into the second half on a helper from Emily Skogseth (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.). Ten minutes later, Skogseth then scored unassisted for a 4-0 advantage. Only a minute after that, Katie Ashpole (Fy., Chaska, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal at the 60:39 mark. Nicki Sobaski (Fy., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) put the finishing touches on the victory with her first goal at the 77:11 mark, assisted by fellow first-year Kari Cammerrer (Savage, Minn.).

Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) earned the shutout win between the posts for the Black and Gold. Maia Trombley (Fy., Sartell, Minn.) finished off the final 13 minutes of the game and made one save.

“We were creative, kept up the Gustie tempo and controlled the game,” Burnett-Kurie said. “Lawrence had a couple very dangerous players and we were able to shut them down defensively. We are looking to improve every game and we made some great strides today with getting players experience all while visibly playing our brand of soccer.”

The Gusties outshot the Vikings 17-1 in each half and had seven corner kick opportunities compared to zero by the home team. Lawrence keeper Katlyn Seiffert made 14 saves.

Gustavus wraps ups its weekend road trip at 3 p.m. Sunday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Fun in Duluth!

A weekend in Duluth is a weekend well spent! We were lucky enough to compete in the Advantage Emblem Cup Tournament hosted by St. Scholastica to kick off our first non-conference games. While we were there to play soccer, we spent the weekend soaking up everything that is Duluth during our time away from the field.

To start the trip off we stopped at the Como Zoo where we made many new furry and wild friends. We had a great time walking around and exploring all of the great exhibits and animals that occupied them. We even tried to take a furry friend to Duluth but the coaching staff thought otherwise. After exploring the zoo for the couple hours we were back on the bus playing games and watching movies on the long ride to our hotel.








The next morning we got up bright and early to start our day off at Canal Park. It was a perfect way to get our legs moving before our exciting first game against Whitewater. We are lucky to have First Year, Erin Teichroew, who gave us a personal tour of her home town. We walked along the lakewalk taking in Lake Superior and all of the fun shops that Duluth has to offer. 

After exploring Canal Park in the morning, we were off to play soccer. We battled Whitewater that evening where we fought hard but ended up losing the match 0-2. It was a great game against a great opponent to start off the season. After the game we headed to former player, Katie Johnsons, home whose family graciously hosted all 29 of us. We spent the night eating good food and talking around the campfire to end a fun filled day.

The next day we were off on the next adventure. We started the day off at Split Rock Light House followed by Goose Berry Falls. They were both such pretty sights for us to explore and spend our day at. After all of the hiking we did we worked up an appetite to go to the legendary Betty's Pies for lunch and of course, pie. The food did not disappoint and the pie helped us compete that much harder at the practice we had later that day. 

 After a hard practice at St. Scholastica to get ready to play River Falls we went to the Teichroew's. We were fed great food and spent the rest of the night competing in a foosball and bags tournament.

Our last day in Duluth was spent doing something that we can all check off the bucket list. We had the opportunity to go to the UMD Surf Shop where we learned how to paddle board on the Great Lake Superior! We had three very patient and knowledgeable instructors as we found our legs against the rocky waves. It was such a fun experience to all learn how to do something new together while also making fools of ourselves in the process. It was a great morning to end our tourists activities and things to do in Duluth before our second big game against River Falls.
