Women’s Soccer Erases One-Goal Deficit For 2-1 Victory Over Concordia

ST. PETER, Minn. – In front of a record-setting crowd Saturday for a women’s soccer game at the Gustie Soccer Field, Gustavus erased a second half 1-0 deficit and came away with an emotional 2-1 victory over Concordia on a day that celebrated Trina Rinke – a would-be junior defender who is missing the season as a result of her treatment for ovarian cancer, which was diagnosed this summer.

After a scoreless first half that saw Gustavus outshoot Concordia 12-3, it was the Cobbers that struck first 48 seconds into the second half. The Gusties put that goal behind them in a hurry as they answered 23 seconds later. Lauren Johnson (Fy., Woodbury, Minn.) fired a shot from the top of the box that cleared the keeper’s head and snuck under the crossbar. Thirteen minutes passed until Emily Skogseth (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) scored what proved the be the game-winner on a pass from Grace Brustad (Jr., Edina, Minn.).
Gustavus finished the game with a 20-5 advantage in shots, while Ashley Becker (Jr., Farmington, Minn.) tallied four saves. Perhaps Becker’s best play of the game occurred on a Cobber breakaway with 18:30 remaining in the game as she stepped up and made a diving stop on the ball, preventing an open shot that could have tied the game.
Gustavus continues its homestand at 4 p.m. Tuesday against the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
